WORKSHOP
HOW TO SOLO
Next How to Solo
February 11, Dansens Hus Oslo
How to solo is a performative practice on and off stage. For dance artists and students in dance education - and for the audience. The project was founded at Scenehuset in Oslo and the workshop took place there in the beginning. How To Solo is now for the season of 2025 and 2026 a part of the program at Dansens Hus Oslo and take place once every season.
How to Solo is a concept where we explore solo work together, led by Tone Kittelsen. The concept is based on her curiosity for the solo format, and a desire to have more people to share her own practice with. We work with the intuitive dance, the one that cannot be planned, but must be allowed to arise in and of itself. Foto: Tale Hednes / Dansens Hus
Breaking the pattern
In the workshop "Breaking the Pattern," we work on acquiring new movements in our bodies and challenging fixed patterns and habits. The goal is to explore how we often limit ourselves in our movements and to open up to new expressions and forms through improvisation and physical exercises.
Participants are encouraged to let go of control and allow their bodies to move freely through exercises designed to help them become more liberated and move in new directions. We will focus on identifying and breaking down the habits stored in our bodies and testing various methods to experience a new physicality throughout.
The workshop emphasizes each participant's individual needs for exploring their own body and movement. The background and idea for the workshop arose during my dance studies, when I realized that the physicality I was performing wasn't my own, but movements my body had learned and adopted from others. This led me to work on exploring my own movement material and finding my own signature, independent of the dance learned from others.
I draw inspiration from various styles, discover my own interests, and explore my physicality in space by improvising with different tasks. In the workshop, we will dance together, but we will also create space to observe each other's dance and support one another in the room.
